Furniture line for the company 'Euphoria Italy' based in Bassano del Grappa

The design of the line draws inspiration from the work of the great Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa. The master teaches us how the choice of honest materials and the meticulous study of details can make a creation—be it architecture or an object—timeless.

The materials used are therefore the simplest: polished brass for the structures, where detailed craftsmanship elevates them to decoration beyond mere function, and wood. The latter achieves its decorative finish through the Shou Sugi Ban technique.

Destroying the material to make it more durable sounds somewhat paradoxical.
Yet this is precisely what happens in the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板), or Yakisugi. The term literally translates to “charred cedar board”: the surface of the wood is carbonized by flame and then sealed with oil. Depending on the degree of burning, the result can range from a simple blackened effect to a “crocodile skin” texture.

In construction, Shou Sugi Ban is essentially a process to make wood both waterproof and fire-resistant.

As with brass, technique, function, and decoration merge into a single element, where the aesthetic and tactile sensuality stem directly from the application of necessity.
